The size of the art object is impressive - three by four meters, but the main feature is that the author painted it decorative painting only half, the rest needs to be completed by the audience. In essence, this is a collective performance where everyone contributes to the creation of the work. In 2016, large coloring walls first appeared on Kamergersky Lane, but they have been traveling around the world for about four years. Exactly this amount of time has passed since Max Goshko-Dankov quit doing PR and went into free swimming. We talked with the artist about the difficulties of a radical change of profession and the meaning of creativity.

Start

I started drawing at the age of 12, I even graduated art school. But in my youth I was never seriously involved in art; it always went parallel to my main activity. I moved from Smolensk to Moscow in 2002. I entered the master's program at the journalism department, where I studied French and English, and now I know them perfectly. During his studies, he was engaged in political PR for some time and was an assistant to several Frenchmen. After studying, he became a PR specialist in the beauty fashion field and remained in it until he was 33 years old. And then it dawned on me that I no longer wanted to engage in either commerce or PR. I realized that all the time I was doing something that I wasn’t passionate about. I was enormously distorted, and I went nowhere. This was four years ago. I had 350 thousand rubles from my savings, but from this money I also had to pay for the mortgage (82 thousand rubles per month). My finances were quickly running out. I didn’t know anyone in the art world then, there was an ocean in front of me: swim wherever you want. I bet on the West, since in Russia there is no appreciative art market. And I was right.

Professional background as chief assistant

I wouldn’t be an artist if I didn’t have a commercial background. For example, I am not afraid to express myself and stand out, because there is a clear rule - water does not flow under a lying stone. To the artist in modern world you have to be super active to become at least noticeable. On at the moment I only choose projects that I like. And before agreeing to a job, I say to myself: “Max, have you completely changed your life in order to do now everything that is being offered to you? No, you changed your life in order to do, first of all, what interests you, what you feel.” I work harder now than ever because I do it for myself.

Own handwriting

I’m not a media person yet, people won’t recognize me by my face, and I don’t need that. I'm very niche. I clearly understand why I do art – to express myself. I don't follow trends. I started making decorations because I wanted to and that’s it. Since childhood, I loved small drawings: first in black and white, then I started adding color. And I always tried to do something organic – this is when you don’t have an idea to draw something specific. I sit down to paint, I don’t know what colors I’ll use, I don’t know where will he go hand, how crooked the lines will be. I trust this organic story, and my hand always tells me what to do. In the same way – almost out of nowhere – I got the idea to make a coloring book. I needed her. I can’t explain why, I made it primarily for myself. But globally it should calm and pacify. Everyone chooses a color for it, decides whether to go beyond the lines or not, and every action is a frustration. And all because no one really knows himself, what he wants. My global goal is to help people think for five minutes about the questions: “Who am I? What do I like? We don’t hear ourselves in the eternal wheel: home, work, family, plus the endless negativity that rushes from all sides. When people look at my bright works, they take a break from problems, and at the same time understand themselves. No one has ever drawn swear words on my city coloring pages; vandalism is out of the question. The only time people wrote nasty things on my work was at the cultural forum in Manege!

No idols!

I have no problem with inspiration because I am very afraid of idolatry. I want to stew in myself and produce an individual product, without a top list of favorite artists and a selection of the best museums. I see a lot of opportunists who go to exhibitions, look at what’s trending and start doing everything according to this maze. This doesn’t work, you need to create trends yourself, create something that the world has not yet seen. When I launched the large coloring book project, it turned out that no one had done this before me, and I didn’t even know about it. I was the first male artist who created a book of artistic coloring books not only in Russia, but also in Europe. At least that's what the publisher said.
