The year the time machine was created. Detailed biography of the Time Machine group. Biography, discography, information. Rock encyclopedia. Events of the last decade

It often happens that the name of a performer or musical group becomes for millions of people a symbol of the era they lived through - it is so closely woven into their personal memories that it becomes an integral part of them. For many current Russians, and especially for those whose youth fell in the seventies and eighties, this is, of course, the “Time Machine” group. The composition, photos and description of the creative path of the legendary group will be the topic of our article.

How it all began

It all started back in 1968, when students from Moscow school No. 19 created a rock band called The Kids. Today's old people remember well that in those days it was rare to find a school that did not have its own vocal and instrumental ensemble. This fashion was a tribute to the general fascination with the songs of the then Western idols the Beatles, and other inhabitants of the musical Olympus.

From English, the name of the group could be translated in different ways - “kids”, “guys” and even “kids”. So, the first cast of these “goat guys” included: Andrei Makarevich, his friend Mikhail Yashin and two girl vocalists - Larisa Kashpero and Nina Baranova. Imitating their idols, the group performed English-language repertoire at various school parties and amateur concerts without much success. Looking ahead, it should be said that the composition of the “Time Machine” group will change many times over the years.

English version of the group name

Fate gave them a chance when, that same year, the professional VIA Atlanta performed at their school, and its director A. Sikorsky communicated with the young musicians on equal terms and even played music with them during the break. This evening helped the guys to believe in themselves. The very next year they created a new team, which included their peers from neighboring school No. 20 - Beatles fans like themselves. The journey had begun.

The name of the group was taken, as in the first case, in English - Time Machines, a prototype of the future “Time Machine”, but in the plural. The first cast of “Time Machine” was purely male. It included: Andrei Makarevich (guitar, vocals) - he will be a constant member of all subsequent bands, Igor Mazaev (bass guitar), (rhythm guitar), Sergei Kawagoe (keyboards), Pavel Rubin (bass guitar) and drummer Yuri Borzov. The future composition of “The Time Machine” will mainly be formed from them.

Failed architects

Also in 1969, the first recording of Time Machines songs took place, performing mainly with a repertoire made up of cover versions of hits by American and English groups, supplemented by English-language compositions of their own composition. Only after some time did he begin to write lyrics in Russian. There is no doubt that during this period the musicians were influenced by the hippie movement, popular among Western and Soviet youth. This was reflected in their songs and their entire lifestyle.

The seventies begin for two band members Andrei Makarevich and Yuri Borzov with important event- they enter the Moscow Architectural Institute, where, learning the secrets of architecture, they continue their music studies. There they also met Alexei Romanov, who was soon to join the Time Machine, and a little later - with A. Kutikov, who in 1971 was invited to the group to replace I. Mazaev, who had gone into the army.

Official appearance of the group's name

In the early seventies, the team continued to remain amateur, and its composition changed several times. During these years, Time Machines successfully performed in the beat club, then created in Moscow under the patronage of the Komsomol City Committee. It is curious that a year earlier they were not accepted there due to their “low performing level.” By the way, at the beginning of their career, the Beatles were denied recording songs for the same reason.

The Russian-language and familiar name of the group first officially appeared in 1973 and was forever assigned to the group. Until 1975, he went through a difficult period, performing on dance floors and random concerts. During this period, the composition of “Time Machine” changed several times. Fifteen musicians managed to be in this group. Problems also arose in the life of the group leader A. Makarevich. Due to a conflict with the leadership of the architectural institute, he was expelled under a formal pretext.

Recognition of professionalism

The group's popularity grew rapidly when, after meeting Boris Grebenshchikov at the Tallinn Festival in 1976, it got the opportunity to tour Leningrad frequently. In the city on the Neva she enjoyed constant success. The beginning of experiments with sound dates back to this same period. The composition of “Time Machine” in 1977 was replenished with the addition of saxophonist E. Legusov and trumpeter S. Velitsky. This gave the songs they performed a new expressiveness.

In 1980, having finally become a professional group, the group received official status at Rosconcert. Her artistic director O. Melik-Pashayev is appointed, and A. Makarevich is appointed musical. This year, “Time Machine” expected great success at the festival in Tbilisi, where it won the main prize, and thanks to which the first album released by Melodiya appeared.

Creativity to live outside ideological frameworks

Those whose youth was spent under socialism remember how Soviet ideology, deceitful and hypocritical in its essence, filled all spheres of life, and mass art languished under its especially strict control. For the audience to see new program, she had to receive approval from various authorities and artistic councils, where her fate was decided by people who knew nothing about art and took into account only compliance with the requirements of the current party line.

The success of “Time Machine” at the Tbilisi festival is explained not only by the artistic merits of the performance of the compositions. This was, in fact, the first time that musicians appeared on the official Soviet stage who stood out sharply from the general faceless, but ideologically consistent mass. No wonder the concert organizers, discouraged by their phenomenal success, took measures to ensure that the winning musicians left the festival before it ended.

Triumph in the city on the Neva

In the eighties, the group's popularity in Moscow and Leningrad reached unprecedented proportions. According to eyewitnesses, the excitement at their tour concerts was comparable only to the madness of the times of Beatlemania. The Sports Palace, where the performances took place, was attacked by thousands of teenagers, and the musicians who brought them were forced to resort to detour maneuvers in order to save the cast of “Time Machine” from the enthusiastic crowd. 1980 marked the beginning of their unprecedented rise.

The result of a twenty-year journey

In the early nineties, the time came to sum up the first results. Ideological censorship no longer exists, and Andrei Makarevich releases his book “Everything is very simple,” in which he talks about everything that the group has had to endure over the past twenty years. "Time Machine" is still among the most popular musical groups countries. She takes part in many festivals and often travels with touring programs. Due to the fact that perestroika opened up the opportunity to travel abroad freely, the geography of their trips expanded significantly, including many countries around the world.

The composition of “Time Machine”, by this time mostly already established and time-tested, is periodically replenished with invited musicians, including Pavel Rubin, Alik Mazaev and a number of other names well known to rock fans. In the nineties, no one could do without the participation of Andrei Makarevich and his team. New Year's program and not a single festival of any note.

Life of the group in the difficult nineties

The group celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 1994 with a grand concert on Red Square, in which many of the country’s most popular musical groups took to the stage with them. Their official position was largely strengthened due to the support they provided to Boris Yeltsin, participating in the “Vote or Lose” campaign in 1996, which became part of his election campaign.

At the beginning of the 2000s, the composition of the Time Machine group was replenished with keyboard player Andrei Derzhavin. The next stage begins in their history, which included a lot of work related to the search for new forms of sound and the use of various audio effects. At the same time, the group does not stop performing concerts and releasing discs, both in Russian studios and abroad. In particular, their albums are released by the famous English company Sintez Records, famous for producing Beatles records.

Events of the last decade

Second decade XXI century, Makarevich begins with the release of three of his new books, which quickly became popular among music lovers of all ages. In 2012, a film dedicated to them, directed by M. Kapitanovsky, was released. It was called “The Taimashin: The Birth of an Epoch” - this is a literal repetition of how “Time Machine” was designated in 1983 on the blacklist of ideologically unreliable musical groups.

The composition of the group has changed many times throughout the history of its existence. 2012 was no exception. At the end of June, E. Margulis left it, preferring the development of his own project. Soon his place was taken by Igor Khomich, who had previously collaborated with the Kalinov Most group. In 2014, an anniversary charity concert was held with great success on the site in front of the Luzhniki sports complex, in which the group “Time Machine” also performed. The 2014 line-up remained unchanged, and on its 45th anniversary the team performed its most popular hits.

Concerns of our day

At the beginning of February 2015, fans of the group were alarmed by information that appeared in the press about an alleged split within the group related to the different positions of its members regarding the events in Ukraine. This information seemed quite probable, since lately Political issues have become an exciting topic of discussion for many people. Fortunately, this was soon rebutted.

Finally, let’s name the composition of the “Time Machine” group in 2015, which has remained unchanged to this day: Andrey Makarevich (guitar, vocals), (vocals, bass guitar), Valery Efimov (drums) and Andrey Derzhavin (keyboards, backing vocals).

The group's concerts are canceled after "calls from above"

Time Machine manager Anton Chernin said in an interview with a Ukrainian publication that the group is experiencing a real split. Ukraine has become a bone of contention: some musicians support President Putin, others support the current Kyiv authorities. Some media took this information as news about the breakup of the group. However, Chernin hastened to reassure fans.

“Andrei Derzhavin and the director of the group, Vladimir Sapunov, signed a letter in support of the operation in Crimea and support Putin’s side. And Alexander Kutikov (who shares Makarevich’s position and supports Ukraine) is now having problems, his concerts in Russia are being canceled or those who previously invited him have simply stopped calling “,” Mashina manager Anton Chernin told the Ukrainian newspaper Vesti.

The other day it became known that the group had lost all concerts in Russia with the exception of the only show in Moscow that had not yet been cancelled. “The group did not cancel their performances, the distributors refused them after calls from above, and there are no new invitations,” Chernin said.

At the same time, he clarified that Makarevich’s tour of four cities of Ukraine in early March will be solo. “The initiative comes from the inviting party. For some reason, only Andrei Vadimovich personally is invited to Ukraine, but not the group,” the manager noted.

According to him, Kutikov is now engaged in a solo project and producing other artists, including Makarevich’s solo projects. Derzhavin performs in retro hodgepodges with his “Stalker” from the old program. In addition, he writes a lot of music for films. Chernin doesn’t know what drummer Valery Efremov does.

However, the fact that the group does not work in the studio and does not tour does not mean that it has broken up. “Everything is fine with the Time Machine, and the difference in the positions of the musicians in Crimea does not prevent them from working together,” Chernin wrote in Facebook.

Makarevich’s problems began after he spoke in the Ukrainian city of Svyatogorsk on August 12 last year in front of children of refugees from Donetsk and Lugansk at the invitation of the Ukrainian Volunteer Fund. According to some reports, he also visited Slavyansk, which by that time had been abandoned by the militia and occupied by Ukrainian security forces. After this, some Russian public figures and politicians said that the rocker’s actions were anti-Russian in nature, accusing him of “singing in front of the punitive forces.”

Later musician in open letter addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin, recently staged by state media, which dubbed the musician a “friend of the junta” and a “collaborator of the fascists.”

It is worth noting that the musician previously stated that he does not share the absolute jubilation over the entry of Crimea into the Russian Federation. “I believe that the annexation of Crimea is a big mistake, because the disadvantages that our country has received and will still receive are incommensurate with the advantages that they are now trying to draw for us,” Makarevich said in one of his interviews. There certainly should be pride in one’s country, but one needs to “work with the mass consciousness honestly,” says the musician, and not “with an axe, at the same time setting everyone up against internal enemies, which are very quickly found and created.”

According to the leader of the group "Dancing Minus" Vyacheslav Petkun,. “For the fact that he sat with Putin at the Paul McCartney concert, for the fact that he went to the Kremlin with other cultural figures, for the fact that he had Smaki, orders, grants, and so on. The state believed that it had bought his loyalty And Makarevich believed that his loyalty was not bought, but his creative merits were appreciated. This is the conflict. It is clear that not only Andrei Makarevich will get into trouble, I think it will come to everyone,” he said in an interview with MK.

Having, in fact, become the first star of Russian rock music and largely predetermined its transition to Russian-language creativity, “TIME MACHINE” was organized in one of the Moscow schools, although its creator has since permanent leader Andrey Makarevich began his journey into music a year earlier. In 1968, he heard “” for the first time and, influenced by the general fashion, assembled the vocal and guitar quartet “THE KIDS” from his classmates and female classmates, which played English-language numbers at school amateur performances with varying degrees of success. Her acquaintance with A. Sikorsky and K. Nikolsky’s “ATLANTS”, who were already singing in Russian at that time, prompted her to form a “real” group and start composing songs on her own.
The first, very short-lived, composition of “TIME MACHINE” included: Andrey Makarevich - guitar, vocals; Alexander Ivanov - guitar; Pavel Rubin - bass; Igor Mazaev - piano; Yuri Borzov - drums. The need to achieve a minimally professional sound soon caused changes: one after another, Ivanov, Rubin and Mazaev left. They were replaced by Alexander Kutikov - bass, vocals and Sergei Kawagoe - keyboards. Little by little, the group began to perform, gaining popularity in the surrounding schools.
In 1970, the last of the “veterans” - Yu. Borzov - was replaced by drummer Maxim Kapitanovsky, quite famous in Moscow. “TIME MACHINE” now has its own apparatus and a fairly extensive repertoire. Two years later, however, Kapitanovsky leaves to subsequently disappear into the restaurant-philharmonic carousel, and the group, not finding a worthy replacement for him, breaks up. For the next 12 months or a little more, the fate of the participants in “TIME MACHINE” turned out to be connected with the fairly well-known pop group in Moscow “BEST YEARS” by R. Zobnin. Shortly before this, “THE BEST YEARS” radically changed its composition and one of the new recruits was Makarevich’s fellow student at the Architectural Institute, Sergei Grachev, who brought Makarevich, Kutikov and Kawagoe after him.
In 1973, “THE BEST YEARS” almost in its entirety went to the professional stage and “TIME MACHINE” was brought back to life. From the fall of 1973 to the beginning of 1975, the group went through troubled times, performing on dance floors and sessions, playing “for board and shelter” in southern resorts, constantly changing the lineup. During these one and a half years, at least 15 musicians passed through the group, among whom were drummers Yuri Fokin and Mikhail Sokolov, guitarists Alexey “White” Belov, Alexander Mikoyan and Igor Degtyaryuk, violinist Sergei Ostashev, keyboardist Igor Saulsky and many others. Unable to withstand this whirlwind, Kutikov eventually went to "", Saulsky later played with Alexei Kozlov's "ARSENAL".
By the spring of 1975, the composition of “TIME MACHINE” had stabilized: Makarevich, Kawagoe (as a result of all these movements, he ended up behind the drums) and bassist, vocalist Evgeniy Margulis; acquired recognizable features and style of the group, which was determined by the numerous interests and passions of its members: from bard songs to blues and from country to rock and roll. Plus Makarevich’s characteristic texts: a little ironic, sometimes a little pathetic, in the form of a parable or fable, they touched wide circle problems characteristic of the youth of that time.
In March 1976, “TIME MACHINE” triumphantly performed at the Tallinn “Days of Popular Music”, after which, at the invitation of “MYTHS” and “AQUARIUM”, it gave several concerts in Leningrad, which became the beginning of a massive “machine mania” that lasted 5 years. For six months, Leningrad bluesman Yuri Ilchenko (ex-“MYTHS”) joined the group. “TIME MACHINE” makes shuttle flights to Leningrad every 2-3 months, giving several concerts, causing confusion in the ranks of local rock fans, and then disappears again.
The growth of the group’s popularity was also facilitated by its participation in G. Danelia’s film “Afonya”, in which its then hit “You or I” (“Sunny Island”) was heard. Experiments with the composition continued. After Ilchenko’s departure, violinist Nikolai Larin, trumpeter Sergei Kuzminok, clarinetist Evgeniy Legusov, keyboardists Igor Saulsky (secondary) and Alexander Voronov (ex-“”) appeared in “TIME MACHINE”. In 1978, Leningrad sound engineer Andrei Tropillo released the first magnetic album “TIME MACHINE “Birthday”. The following year the group prepared a monumental program “ The Little Prince"with extensive instrumental solos, poetry readings and the beginnings of directing (it was also recorded on film).
In the summer of 1979, internal contradictions that had been accumulating in the group for a long time found their resolution. TIME MACHINE disintegrated again: Kawagoe and Margulis, having gathered old friends, formed RESURRECTION, Voronov reorganized "", and Makarevich brought it to stage new line-up“TIME MACHINES”: Alexander Kutikov - bass, vocals; Valery Efremov - drums; Petr Podgorodetsky - keyboards, vocals. They prepared a new repertoire, went to work at the Moscow regional theater comedies, and in March 1980 they became the main sensation and laureate of the All-Union Rock Festival “Spring Rhythms. Tbilisi-80". The group finally came out of hiding and received recognition from millions of listeners. However, the thaw did not last long. In the spring of 1982, a campaign was launched against rock music, inspired by the article “Blue Bird Stew” in Komsomolskaya Pravda. The first album was never released on Melodiya, the TIME MACHINE program was corrected and revised many times by countless artistic councils. Podgorodetsky left the group and was replaced by violinist Sergei Ryzhenko and keyboard player Alexander Zaitsev. Ryzhenko, unfortunately, leaves a year later.
The forced decline in the activity of “TIME MACHINE” prompted Makarevich to look for himself in other genres. He performed solo (with an acoustic repertoire), acted in films (together with the group): in two not very interesting feature films by A. Stefanovich - “Soul” (1982) and “Start Over” (1986), wrote music for the films “Speed” and “Breakthrough.”
Only in 1986, with a change in the entire cultural policy countries "TIME MACHINE" was able to operate normally. New, rather strong programs “Rivers and Bridges” and “In circle of light”, which served as the basis for records of the same name. A retrospective record “10 years later” was also released, on which Makarevich tried to restore the sound and repertoire of “THE TIME MACHINE” of the mid-70s. The group visited several foreign rock festivals and worked on an album in the USA, where, by the way, their “pirated” record was released back in 1981.
The fate of “TIME MACHINES in one form or another is dedicated documentaries“Rock Cult”, “Rock and Fortune”, “Six Letters about Beat”. For a long time, “TIME MACHINE” did not attach importance to determining the names of its albums and did not date them for years. In the discography, we present the most important and interesting samples of the group’s recordings, which, by the way, also had a great many “pirated concert” albums.
In the summer of 1990, before a tour in Kuibyshev, Alexander Zaitsev left THE TIME MACHINE. Evgeny Margulis, who now plays guitar, and Peter Podgorodetsky return to the group. The repertoire of “TIME MACHINE” again contains many songs from the “classical” repertoire of past years.
A year later the group participates in International festival“Musicians of the world - to the children of Chernobyl” in Minsk, “Solidarity action with the program “Vzglyad””. The group tours a lot, records CDs, Alexander Kutikov publishes old recordings of the group, Andrei Makarevich writes a book, an exhibition is held in Italy graphic works. Solo projects of group members are recorded and published.
1999 is an anniversary year! Preparations for the tour are underway. The rock group was awarded "For services to development musical art"President Boris Yeltsin with the Order of Honor. The presentation of the awards took place on June 24 with a live broadcast on TV. In November, a press conference and autograph session “TIME MACHINES” was held at GUM, dedicated to the release of the album “Clocks and Signs.” On December 19 at the Sports and Concert Complex “ Olympic" in Moscow, the grand final concert of the anniversary tour of the 30th anniversary of "THE TIME MACHINE" took place. After the concert, the next day there were changes in the composition of the group: the keyboard player, Pyotr Podgorodetsky, was fired, and Andrei Derzhavin was taken in his place after half a year. double CD and video cassette with a recording of the anniversary concert.
A new century and millennium is coming. In 2001, the album “The Place Where the Light” was released. The group is actively touring and actively celebrating their next date. On May 30, 2004, “TIME MACHINE” celebrates its 35th anniversary on Red Square. The concert took place as part of the “Future without AIDS” campaign. The group joined the movement to fight AIDS along with Elton John, musicians of the group “,” Mstislav Rastropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya. This project was continued in St. Petersburg and other major cities of the country. In 2005, a new album, “Mechanically,” was released. In 2006, the musicians set off to record a new disc at the legendary ABBEY ROAD studio in London. The presentation of the album “Time Machine” took place in March 2007 at the Olimpiysky.

Evgeny Margulis leaves the group on June 25, 2012, a month after the 43rd anniversary of “TIME MACHINE,” says a message posted on the group’s official website. The reasons for the guitarist's departure are not stated. At the same time, some media outlets suggested that Margulis was leaving the group to record a solo album.
This is not the first time Margulis says goodbye to TIME MACHINE. In 1979 he left for another popular group- “”, however, after 11 years he still returned to Andrei Makarevich’s team. In addition, the guitarist performed in such groups as "", "AEROBUS" and "
Guitarist Igor KHOMICH is brought into the group as a session musician in the studio and a special guest at concerts.

On December 20, 2017, keyboardist Andrei Derzhavin left the group after 17 years of collaboration.
In November 2017, the team went on tour without Derzhavin, and his place at the keys was taken by former musician group "NUANCE" Alexander Levochkin. Many attributed this to political reasons: because of Derzhavin’s opinion on Crimea, he was not allowed into Ukraine.
Andrei Makarevich denied the rumors: “This is an absolutely temporary coincidence. This could have happened and would have happened at any other time, one way or another.
We work all the time, now there was a Ukrainian tour, and before that there was a tour in Germany, which ended with a concert in London. It so happened that the time to part fell during a pause between these tours.”
Andrey Derzhavin appeared in the group in 2000, leaving own group"STALKER". As part of MACHINE, he played the keys and was also a vocalist and co-author of many songs. The unexpected change of role and the musician’s future plans were revealed by his now former colleague Andrei Makarevich:
“We liked this strangeness then. It seemed to me that this looked extremely unexpected, because no one expected from him the kind of music that we play, but he - please, you. But everything has passed. He revives STALKER. I don’t blame him, he’s his brainchild.”
“TIME MACHINE” will begin the new calendar year with a concert in Tallinn, and in February 2018 it will perform at the Chart’s Dozen Award Ceremony.

Several times in my life I had the same dream. Its essence was that I had to get somewhere where they were waiting for me. Along the way, various everyday difficulties arose, I was delayed here and there and as a result I was late, but somehow very much - say, for the whole day - and I arrived when no one was there, the lights were dimmed, the chairs were overturned and the cleaning lady washes the floor. I don't know why, but more acute feeling I never experienced loss again.

A.V. Makarevich.

In 1968, Andrei Makarevich and his classmates organized the amateur rock band “The Kids”. In 1969, it became known as “Time Machines”, and the songs were performed on English. In 1973, the name was changed to a single number - “Time Machine”, which remains so to this day.

Having performed in 1976 at the Tallinn Youth Songs - 76 festival in Estonia and received the first prize, “Time Machine” became popular.

In the 1980s, the group gained all-Union popularity. “Time Machine” is allowed on television (program “ Musical Ring"), radio, songs written in the 1970s "Turn", "Candle", "Three Windows" become popular. “Turn” has been leading the hit parade of Moskovsky Komsomolets’ “Sound Track” for 18 months. "Time Machine" takes part in the filming of the musical film "Soul" with Sofia Rotaru in leading role.

The rock band actively tours the cities of the USSR. The hits “Horses”, “Blue Bird”, “Puppets” are played in restaurants and at weddings. The group's underground magnetic albums sell in large quantities.

Over the years, such musicians as Alexander Kutikov, Evgeny Margulis, Pyotr Podgorodetsky and others became famous as part of the Time Machine. Because of large quantity composers, the group's musical style is eclectic. In their work, the musicians use elements of classic rock, rock and roll, blues, and bard songs.

“Time Machine” received official recognition in post-perestroika Russia. In 1991, during the State Emergency Committee putsch, all five “machinists” took part in the defense of the White House, for which they were subsequently awarded medals “Defender of Free Russia.” In 1999, the musicians also received the “Order of Honor”, and in 2003 - “For Services to the Fatherland”, IV degree.

The ensemble, which was destined to go down in history as “Time Machine,” had not been called anything at all before, and consisted of 2 guitars (Andrei Makarevich and Mikhail Yashin), and two girls (Larisa Kashperko and Nina Baranova), who sang in English. American folk songs.

It all really started in 1968, when Andrei Makarevich first heard the Beatles. Then two new kids came to their class: Yura Borzov and Igor Mazaev, who joined the newly-minted group “The Kids”. The first composition of the group "The Kids" was approximately as follows: Andrei Makarevich, Igor Mazaev, Yuri Borzov, Alexander Ivanov and Pavel Ruben. Another was Borzov’s childhood friend, Sergei Kavagoe, at whose insistence the singing girls were fired. After some time, the first album of the group "Time Machine" (originally planned as "Time Machines", i.e. in the plural) was recorded. The album consisted of eleven songs in English. The recording technique was not complicated - in the center of the room there was a tape recorder with a microphone, and in front of it were members of the group. Alas, this legendary recording is now lost.

1971 Alexander Kutikov appears in the group, who brought the spirit of major, cloudless rock and roll to the team. Under his influence, the group’s repertoire was replenished with joyful songs “Seller of Happiness”, “Soldier”, etc. At the same time, the first concert of “Time Machine” took place on the stage of the Energetik Palace of Culture, the cradle of Moscow rock.

1972 The first troubles begin. Igor Mazaev is drafted into the army, and soon Yura Borzov, who was a drummer in the group, leaves. The resilient Kutikov brings Max Kapitanovsky into the group, but soon he too is drafted into the army. And then Sergei Kavagoe sits down at the drums. Later, Igor Saulsky joins the lineup, who is huge amount once left the group and returned
again, it is simply impossible to determine exactly when he was in the lineup and when he was not.

1973 Minor friction arises every now and then between Kawagoe and Kutikov. In the end, this leads to the fact that in the spring Kutikov leaves for the Leap Summer group.

1974 Sergei Kavagoe brings Igor Degtyaryuk into the group, who stayed in the lineup for about six months and then, it seems, left for Arsenal. Kutikov returned from Leap Summer, and for some time the group played as follows: Makarevich - Kutikov - Kavagoe - Alexey Romanov. This lasted until the summer of 1975.

1975 Romanov leaves the group, and in the summer Kutikov unexpectedly leaves, and not just anywhere, but to Tula State Philharmonic. At the same time, Evgeny Margulis appeared in the group, and a little later, violinist Kolya Larin.

1976"Time Machine" is invited to Tallinn to the festival "Tallinn Youth Songs-76", where they perform brilliantly, and where they meet for the first time Boris Grebenshchikov and the group "Aquarium", which was at that time a cute acoustic quartet. Grebenshchikov invites them to St. Petersburg. Their concerts are wildly popular. Violinist Kolya Larin is no longer in the lineup, and his place is taken by someone Seryozha Ostashev, who also did not stay long. At the same time, Yura Ilyichenko, the lead singer of "Myths", joined the group.

1977 Ilyichenko, homesick for his hometown, leaves for St. Petersburg, and the “Time Machine” stays with the three of them for a short time. And then it occurs to Andrey to introduce brass players into the group. So a brass section appears in the group: Evgeny Legusov and Sergey Velitsky.

1978 The composition is being replaced. Instead of Velitsky, Sergei Kuzminok joins the team. In the same year, the first studio recording of “Time Machine” took place. Kutikov, who by that time had played in Leap Summer, got a job at the educational speech studio of GITIS in order to use the studio for its intended purpose. Andrei Makarevich turns to him, Kutikov promises to arrange everything, and a few days later the recording begins, known to us as “It was so long ago...”. It lasted a whole week, and it included almost all (at that time) songs of “Time Machine”, with the exception of the first early ones. The recording turned out great, and within a month it was heard everywhere. It’s a pity that the original was lost, and what we are listening to today is a copy that accidentally ended up in the possession of one of Andrei’s acquaintances. In the fall, Mashina Vremeni parted ways with the pipes, and a synthesizer in the person of Sasha Voronov joined the group, although not for long.

1979 The group is falling apart. Sergei Kavagoe and Evgeniy Margulis are leaving for “Resurrection”. At the same time, Kutikov returns to the group, bringing Efremov with him, and a little later Petya Podgorodetsky joins the group. “Time Machine” begins rehearsing with a new lineup, and the group’s repertoire is replenished with such things as “Candle”, “Whom did you want to surprise”, “Crystal City”, “Turn”. In the same year, "Time Machine" became a group of the Moscow Touring Comedy Theater at Rosconcert.

1980"Time Machine" is already very popular, and its name on the theater posters is a guarantee that tickets will be sold out. The theater's poster looked like this: very large at the top - "Time Machine Ensemble", and then small, on the verge of legibility - "In the performance of the Moscow Comedy Theater "The Merry Wives of Windsor" based on the play by W. Shakespeare. " The only problem is that the spectators going on the inscription “Time Machine”, they could really see their favorite group, which sang completely unknown songs on the verge of intelligibility of sound. This was not exactly what the audience expected to see, but this was of little concern to the management of the theater, which was receiving huge profits. This could not continue for long. And then Rosconcert decided that it would be much more profitable to use “Machine” to the fullest. After a successful audition, “Machine of Time” became an independent professional rock band. At the same time, the famous festival “Spring Rhythms-80” took place in Tbilisi. "Time Machine" shares first place with the group "Magnetic Band"

1981 A hit parade appears in the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, and the song “Turn” is declared the song of the year. She stayed in first place for a total of 18 months. All this time the group did not have the right to perform it at concerts, because it was not filled in, and it was not filled in because Rosconcert did not send it to LIT, since it had doubts about what kind of turn it had in mind. The fact that “Turn” was played on Radio Moscow five times a day did not bother anyone.

1982 The Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper blasted the group with the article “Blue Bird Stew.” In response, the editors were overwhelmed with bags of letters under the general motto “Hands off “Machine.” The newspaper, not expecting such a rebuff, had to reduce everything to a general toothless polemic - the matter, they say, is young, and opinions may differ. “Blue Bird Stew " coincided with another split in the group. Petya Podgorodetsky leaves. After a while, Sergei Ryzhenko offers himself, and a little later Alexander Zaitsev joins the lineup.

1983 Sergei Ryzhenko, who had to play supporting roles, leaves, and “Time Machine” remains with four members.

In general, this time is characterized by Andrei Makarveich himself as a time of relative calm. Although, to say that the group did nothing at all would be untrue. Perhaps it was around this period that it began to take shape. as a professional, sustainable team.

1985 A magnetic album "Fish in a Jar" (mini-album) has been recorded, the group is working on recording music for the film "Speed" (dir. D. Svetozarov).

In the same year, "MV" takes part in the cultural program of the XII World Festival youth and students in Moscow.

The second magnetic album of acoustic songs by Andrei Makarevich has been recorded

The group is participating in the filming of the film “Start Over” (dir. A. Stefanovich) One point of clarification: indeed, the group, and not just Andrei Makarevich, starred in this film. Although. of course, AM played the main role.

1986 The film "Start Over" is released on the wide screen. A new concert program “Rivers and Bridges” is being prepared, almost simultaneously the recording of the double album “Rivers and Bridges” is taking place at the Melodiya company. In the same year, positive changes began in relation to “MV” on television. The group participates in the television programs “Jolly Guys”, “Song-86” and “What, Where, When?” (performed: “Dedication to a Cow”, “Song That Doesn’t Exist” and “Music in the Snow”) The group also takes part in the popular music festival Rock Panorama-86 (Moscow), after which. quite promptly for those times, the giant disc “Rock Panorama-86” was released with the songs “Music under the Snow”, “In Good Hour” (“Melody”). "MV" was once again invited to the television program "Musical Ring" (Leningrad TV, presenter T. Maksimova), in which she played brilliantly. The program was then broadcast and on Central Television.. Concerts are being held at the Druzhba University together with the group "Secret", shown on Central Television. Attention! This year the first giant disc of the group "Time Machine" "In Good Hour" is being released by the Melodiya company. The big disadvantage of this disc is that, oddly enough, it was formed without the direct participation of the musicians, and for this reason it is considered insufficient for such a high-profile title as the First Disc. And yet, from a discographic point of view, it is so. Following this, the double album "Rivers and Bridges" ("Melody"), already fully processed and recorded by the musicians, is released, which represents a holistic, orderly album. piece of music. Along the way, as a retrospective of the film “Soul”, the songs “The Path”, “Bonfire” are recorded on the CD EP “Bonfire” together with S. Rotaru, (“Melody”)

1988“MV” again delights TV viewers with its participation in the New Year’s “Blue Light -88” (song “Weathervane”) Work is underway on recording music for the films: “Without a Uniform” and “Bards”. The retro disc "Ten Years Later" ("Melody") is released. The group is preparing a new concert program“In the Circle of Light”, which premiered in the summer at the Rossiya State Central Concert Hall. Alexander Kutikov: “A Protracted Turn” is a completely original book. But at the same time it will be called “Biography of the Time Machine”.

Current and former "machinists" took up memoirs early, and I believe that fans of "MV" have already formed a certain retrospective library. It can include not only the writings of Andrei Makarevich, Maxim Kapitanovsky, Pyotr Podgorodetsky, but also a lot of memories of people wandering on the Internet and the printed press who were somehow involved in the group at different periods.

However, the "Machine" goes on and on. Four decades! And its history is expanding and being rethought. No one has succeeded in such a long-range and hyper-successful flight in Russian rock music and is unlikely to succeed in the foreseeable future. This fact alone makes the “Time Machine” a unique phenomenon in our Palestines. Having started out as the Soviet "Beatles", Makar and his comrades have now turned into Russian "Rollings", at least from a chronological and status point of view.

Biography

Moscow is a state city, and the proximity to the anvils of power filled young seekers of truth to go to official authorities and convince these authorities that the music they - the young - played was necessary and useful to the people. It took so much time and effort that there was not much energy left for actually writing songs. Time Machine is an exception.

"Time Machine" Soviet and Russian rock band, one of the pioneers in rock music of the USSR, founded by Andrei Makarevich in 1969. Over the years, such musicians as Alexander Kutikov, Evgeny Margulis, Pyotr Podgorodetsky and others became famous as part of the Time Machine. Due to the large number of composers, the group's genre is eclectic and uses elements of classic rock, rock n roll, blues, bard.

1970s: founding
A group called The Kids was created by Andrei Makarevich in 1968 from classmates. The ensemble gave its first performance when VIA Atlanta came to the school and gave the young musicians a short practice on their equipment. In 1969, the group began to be called Time Machines, and the songs were performed in English. In 1973 the name was changed to the singular “Time Machine”, which it remains to this day.

In the first years, the composition remains unstable, and the team remains amateurish. At concerts the group performs cover versions of songs The Beatles and their songs in English, written in imitation. In the early 1970s, the group included: Andrei Makarevich (guitar, vocals), Alexander Kutikov (bass guitar), Sergei Kavagoe (drums), the remaining members are constantly changing. For some time, Alexey Romanov, the future founder of Resurrection, played in the Time Machine. In 1975, Kutikov left the Time Machine to join the Leap Summer group, but remained the sound engineer of the Time Machine. He is replaced by Evgeny Margulis, to whom Makarevich transfers the duties of bassist and from now on plays only lead guitar. Margulies also begins writing blues-influenced songs for the group.

Having performed in 1976 at the festival “Tallinn Youth Songs in ?’76” in Estonia and received first prize, Time Machine gained popularity for the first time. In 1978, the group recorded their debut album It Was So Long Ago..., which was not released by an official label until 1992. In the same year, the audio fairy tale The Little Prince based on the fairy tale by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was recorded, which was essentially an album of Time Machine songs with text interludes from the book. Musicians begin to perform frequently in the theater, playing songs embedded in performances, which helps circumvent the ban on private concerts.

1980s: line-up with Zaitsev
In 1979, a major financial scandal led to the almost complete collapse of the group. Margulis, Kavagoe and Alexey Romanov leave Makarevich and create the Resurrection group. Teaming up with Kutikov again, Makarevich recruits a new line-up, which includes keyboardist Pyotr Podgorodetsky and drummer Valery Efremov. Podgorodetsky wrote several songs for the group with a humorous slant, which he performed himself, but in 1982 he left the group, joining Joseph Kobzon’s troupe. His place is taken by Alexander Zaitsev, who, unlike Peter, was not the third vocalist.
Andrey Makarevich receives a certificate from Yuri Saulsky at the Tbilisi-80 festival

With the new lineup, the group makes a triumphant debut at the Tbilisi Rock Festival in 1980 and receives first prize for the songs Snow and Crystal City, ahead of Autograph and Aquarium. The popularity of the group emerges from the underground and turns into an all-Union one. The time machine is allowed on television (the “Musical Ring” program), radio, the songs Turn, Candle, Three Windows, written back in the 1970s, become popular. “Turn” tops the hit parade of Moskovsky Komsomolets’ “Sound Track” for 18 months. “Time Machine” takes part in the soundtrack to the film “Soul” and the animated series “Monkeys”.

Rosconcert signs an agreement with the group, giving the green light to legal concerts. In the early 1980s, the rock band actively toured the cities of the USSR, acquiring a significant army of fans. The most popular compositions of that period: “Horses”, “Blue Bird”, “Puppets” are played in restaurants and at weddings. The group's underground magnetic albums sell in large quantities.

In 1982–1984, during the reign of Andropov and Chernenko, campaigns against amateur musical groups began in the USSR. During this, in the newspaper " Komsomolskaya Pravda“An article by Nikolai Krivomazov “Blue Bird Stew” was published (the title refers to the Time Machine song “Blue Bird”), where the group and its music were subjected to unconstructive criticism. The article was compiled based on an initiative letter from a group of famous artists; it was signed by the writer Viktor Astafiev, chief director Krasnoyarsk state theater opera and ballet Maximillian Vysotsky, soloist, winner of the competition. Glinka Evgeny Oleinikov, director of the Krasnoyarsk Philharmonic Leonid Samoilov, conductor Nikolai Silvestrov, poet and playwright Roman Solntsev.

Meanwhile, Andrei Makarevich starred in the film “Start Over,” whose main character was based on himself. Several songs from “The Time Machine” are heard in the film. Only in 1986 the first official album of “Time Machine” was released “In Good Hour» despite the fact that the material on unofficial magnetic albums amounts to several dozen songs. Following this, the album “Rivers and Bridges” is released. In 1987, “Time Machine” was again the winner of the “Sound Track” for the year. Andrey Makarevich is second only to Valery Leontiev in the rating of singers. The group makes its first tour abroad.

1990s: with Margulis and Podgorodetsky
In 1989, “Time Machine” celebrated its 20th anniversary. Margulis and Podgorodetsky take part in the anniversary concert at the Luzhniki Sports Palace. Due to a personal conflict with Zaitsev, and also, according to the group members, because of his problems with alcohol and drugs, which led to the disruption of rehearsals, Makarevich was forced to refuse his services. As a result, Margulis and Podgorodetsky returned to the group. Thus, the group becomes four composers and vocalists out of five members at the same time. Next anniversary concert“Time Machines”, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the group, takes place on Red Square with the participation of several invited groups, including “Aquarium”, “DDT”, “Black Obelisk”, “Chaif” and others. The performance, which lasted about six hours, was broadcast directly on Channel One Russian television, gathering a huge audience. About 300,000 people attended the concert itself.

Alexander Kutikov creates the recording company Sintez records and becomes the group's producer. Thanks to this, “Time Machine” no longer depends on the state monopolist company “Melodiya”. Finally, the double album “It Was So Long Ago” with material from the 1970s is being released. In the 1990s, the group released seven albums, the most popular of which were “Freelance Commander of the Earth,” “Breaking Off,” “Cardboard Wings of Love,” and “Clocks and Signs.” Among the most famous songs of this period is “One Day the World Will Bend Under Us,” the video for which was broadcast on Russian television channels.

“Time Machine” received official recognition in post-perestroika Russia. In 1991, during the State Emergency Committee putsch, all five “machinists” took part in the defense of the White House, for which they were subsequently awarded medals “Defender of Free Russia.” In 1999, the musicians also received the “Order of Honor”, and in 2003 “For Services to the Fatherland”, IV degree. In 1996, along with many other groups, "Machine" participated in the "Vote or Lose!" campaign. in support of the candidacy of Boris Yeltsin.

2000s: Modern period
In 1999, the group celebrates its 30th anniversary. Immediately after the end of the concert at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex (December 1999), Pyotr Podgorodetsky was fired from the group. Among the possible reasons for the dismissal, the band's musicians and critics indicate Peter's problems with drugs (addiction to cocaine), absenteeism from rehearsals, and others. His place is taken by Makarevich’s old acquaintance Andrei Derzhavin.

In 2000, “Time Machine” toured with the “Resurrection” group, where Margulis worked at the same time, as part of the “50 Years for Two” tour. The album “The Place Where the Light” is released, the song of the same name is included in the “Chart Dozen”, the video for it is broadcast on television. Since 2000, “Time Machine” has been a regular participant in the “Wings” rock festival.

In 2004, the album “Machinally” was released, two songs from it were included in the soundtrack to the television series “Dancer”. In 2007, the album “Time Machine” was released, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The song “Fly Away” is included in the Chart’s Dozen. With the financial and informational support of Avtoradio, the group plays two free concerts: on September 22, 2007 at the Tushino airfield in Moscow, where it attracts about 50,000 spectators, and on September 23 at Palace Square in St. Petersburg, where the number of spectators exceeds 60,000. On June 8, 2008, with the support of TNK-BP, “Time Machine” plays free concert in the city of Ryazan on Lenin Square, which attracts about 20,000 spectators.
