Biography

Marshall Bruce Mathers III better known by his stage names Eminem and Slim Shady, he is an Oscar and Grammy Award winner. His albums have sold over seventy million copies worldwide, making Eminem one of the best-selling musicians of the early 2000s. Eminem was discovered by rapper and producer Dr. Dre. Eminem later signed a contract with his record label Aftermath Entertainment.

Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney awarded Marshall for his "verbal energy" and his popular poetry and lyricism. Eminem has a bad reputation and there is a lot of controversy surrounding his lyrics. Despite the success of his acclaimed album The Marshall Mathers LP and four Grammy nominations, critics such as GLAAD accused his lyrics of homophobia and misogyny, while others argued they were promotional violence. In 2002, he starred in the semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile.

Biography:

Youth

Marshall Mathers was born in 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. Fifteen-year-old Debbie Nelson to no one famous singer in one of the local musical groups. She marries one of the group members. On October 17, 1972, their son is born, he is named, like his father, Marshall Mathers III. When the child was six months old, his father abandoned the family. Marshall is often left to live with relatives. He becomes attached to his mother's brother Ronnie Polkingharn. Marshall and his mother constantly move from place to place. The family moved to live in Detroit, in the Eastside area. He constantly skipped school, where during breaks in the cafeteria he staged rap freestyles, in which he won.

When Marshall was 12 years old, he and Debbie finally settled on the East Side of Detroit, Michigan. Here the boy got into a lot of trouble. In the fourth grade, he was terrorized every day by a high school student named DiAngelo Bailey. It was no better at school. Marshall had to change schools every two or three months, and it was difficult for him to make friends, do well in school, and stay out of trouble.

In the winter of 1983, Marshall was beaten so severely that he lay in a coma for ten days. Years of suffering will have a serious impact on Eminem's entire work. In 1984, Marshall and his mother return to Kansas City, and Marshall again meets with his uncle Ronnie. “My uncle was actually my best friend,” Marshall recalls. Ronnie was a fan of rap music and recorded several of his rap tapes for Marshall. In general, Ronnie had a great influence on Eminem's subsequent work. When Marshall was still 9 years old, Ronnie brought a tape that changed everything Marshall thought about rap: Ice T's "Reckless." At the age of 13, Marshall began to invent and record his own raps. Marshall became interested in rap music, he began rapping in school cafeterias, doing freestyles there, and eventually gained a reputation as a capable rapper. He takes it for himself name Eminem.

At age 15, Marshall met his future wife, Kim Scott, at school. That same year he founded his first rap group.

“I would never do it without him,” Eminem says about Ronnie: “If it weren’t for him, I would never do this.”

At the age of 17, Marshall left school, after which he tried several strange low-paid professions. Eminem performs live every night on one of the local radio stations.

In 1995, Eminem made his debut as part of the group Soul Intent, which also included Proof (former member of the group D-12 and Eminem's best friend) and DJ Butterfingers. Almost nothing is known about this release today, except for a few facts: 1. The disc contained the track Fucking backstabber dedicated to the African-American rapper Champtown, with whom Eminem recorded several tracks in the past, but who subsequently tried to molest Eminem’s wife Kim. 2. One of the tracks was called Biterphobia, which few who listened to it call one of the best tracks of the then-beginning rapper. 3. Today this disc is almost impossible to find, since its circulation was negligible, due to the lack of sponsors from the group.

In 1996, Eminem recorded his first album, Infinite, which went unnoticed due to Detroit's oversaturation of hip-hop. Moreover, he was even accused of copying the style of rappers Nas and Az. Eminem recalls: "'Infinite' was an album where I wanted to figure out what style of rap I would perform in, how I would sound and present myself." Eminem's solo debut took place in 1996, when his album "Infinite" was released on an independent label. Eminem himself now views it more as a demo, but at that time he was very upset by the cold reception this record received.

Just for himself, he began working on the next EP, “Slim Shady.”

Legend has it that the famous black rapper Dr. Dre accidentally discovered Eminem's demo tape in Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine's garage and immediately became interested in the young talented newcomer. However, according to the facts, the Doctor did not sign a contract with Eminem until he won the Los Angeles Battle. Then the couple began working together. Dr. Dre felt that the songs from the Slim Shady EP needed to be re-released. This is how “Slim Shady LP” (1999) was born, which became a bestseller. The popularity of the disc was especially facilitated by the success of the video clip for “My Name Is,” which was often played on MTV. Eminem's controversial and edgy lyrics began to cause widespread controversy. Some believed that the rapper was exposing the ulcers of society, others that he was inciting hatred towards certain categories of society (women, gays) and people in general. Some found him witty and impudent, others rude and narrow-minded. The artist himself spoke about this as follows: “I say things that shock people. But I don't do things that shock people. I'm not trying to be the next Tupac, but I don't know how long I'm going to be on this planet. So while I’m here, I try to do as much as I can.”

Dr. Dre completely changed Eminem's life. They say that after hearing a freestyle by a guy hiding under the pseudonym Slim Shady on one of the many radio Los Angeles, Dre launched a real hunt for the white rapper from Michigan. He, of course, achieved his goal, and soon Eminem signed a contract with the Aftermath label. And from that moment on, things went uphill for Slim Shady. The pair began working together, and soon the first single from the new album, "the Slim Shady LP", was released, containing two tracks "I Just Dont Give a Fuck" and "Brain Damage". And then there was the super-successful release of the album, videos for “My Name Is”, “Guilty Conscience”, “Role Model”, performances with such performers as Dr. Dre, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Xzibit.

Between the first and second albums, Eminem managed to appear on the disc of his teacher “Dr. Dre 2001." Eminem's second full-length work, The Marshall Mathers LP, appeared in the spring of 2000 and again caused a lot of controversy. As the title suggests, here the rapper spoke not on behalf of a fictional character, but on his own own name. High popularity accompanied such things as “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan”. The latter (sung with singer Dido and released as a single in 2001) depicted, as it were, “two halves” of Eminem: the artist himself and his average fan, who is completely blown away.

The shocking video clip for this song again caused a lot of criticism. With his behavior, the artist only fueled the passions flaring up around him: he either punched the face of a man whom, as it seemed to him, his wife was kissing in a bar, or he spoke unflatteringly about his own mother in the text of one of the compositions (for which his parent sued him) . Numerous public organizations spoke out against Eminem. The Gay and Lesbian Association said it would boycott Eminem's Grammy nomination. Nevertheless, at the 2001 Grammy Awards, Eminem received as many as three awards, thanking everyone who perceived his album as music, and not as a reason for a scandal. In June of the same year, Eminem appears as a member of the group D12, which releases its debut album Devil's Night. The singles Purple Hills and Fight Music gain wild popularity among the public, which ensures the group's success and future prospects. In May 2002 it was released new clip Eminem's Without Me, in which he takes on Moby and Limp Bizkit, followed by the release of the rapper's highly anticipated album The Eminem Show in June. The album was certified eight-platinum and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide to date. In October of the same year, the singer’s autobiographical film “8 Mile” was released. In it, the rapper played a beggar rapper Jimmy Smith, nicknamed Rabbit. The film was very warmly received by the public, and the soundtrack to it, the song Lose Yourself, earned the singer an Oscar. The total budget of the film was $41 million.

In April 2004, Eminem appeared in public again, only as a representative of the group D12, which released its new album D12 World. In the first week, 550 thousand copies of the albums were sold. The video for the song “My Band” gained great popularity among the public, in which Eminem sarcastically emphasizes that D12 remains just a famous group, while Eminem himself becomes a star on a planetary scale. And in November of the same year he released his fifth studio album, Encore. What’s most interesting is that this is the rapper’s first album (not counting Infinite) who did not receive a single Grammy statuette; in almost all nominations, Eminem lost to the new hip-hop star Kanie West. Then there were rumors that this was the rapper's last solo album; in December 2005, Eminem released a collection of his best songs, Curtain Call: The Hits, which included his three new compositions. A year later, in December 2006, the rapper, on his own behalf, released a compilation of the best tracks recorded on Shady Records, in which Eminem introduced the public to new musicians Cashis and Boby Creekwater. In support of the album, the only video “You dont know” was shot. In 2007, together with T.I, he recorded the song “TouchDown” for the album T.I. vs T.I.P. After which Eminem left show business for more than two years.

In February 2009, the rapper made a name for himself again by recording a new track, “Crack a bottle,” together with his colleagues 50 cent and Dr. Dre. This track rose to number one on the Billboard Chart in just a few weeks. Then it became known that the rapper’s new album would be released on May 19, 2009. In April of the same year, a video for the song “We Made You” was released, in which the rapper shows that he does not change his old style at all. Then the third single was released, which was called 3 A.M. with a rather drug theme, and a clip where Eminem portrays a crazy maniac who kills everyone in the clinic he meets. After two more singles Old Time's Sake and Beautiful, Relapse itself comes out. But Eminem is not discouraged, and announces Relapse 2 (There will be joint tracks with T.I., Stat Quo and Jay-Z), which he planned to release at the end of 2010. The release of the new album has been postponed to 2010. However, on December 21, 2009, Eminem released a re-release of his sixth studio album, called Relapse: Refill. Relapse: Refill features seven tracks, including "Forever", featuring Drake, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne (as the soundtrack to the film More Than A Game), "Taking My Ball" (also previously released with the video game DJ Hero) and five never before heard. "I want to provide more material for fans this year as I originally planned, hopefully these tracks will help fans wait for Relapse 2, which you will see next year," Eminem said.

In 2014, New Zealand's ruling party released a campaign video. It featured a slightly modified melody from “Lose Yourself.” According to representatives, they bought the instrumental on the website - it was signed as “in the style of Eminem.” The rapper's side filed a lawsuit. The judge ruled in favor of the rapper and ordered the party to pay $400 thousand.

- White

Eminem is the most famous rapper in the world. However, he is white.

On the track “White America,” Marshall discusses how white skin influenced his career. “When I was underground, no one gave a fuck I was white,” he raps. The idea is that his skin color helped his career a lot. “No one would listen to me if I were black” is one of the main ideas of the song. As a result, a white guy in a black genre became the best-selling rapper in the world.

- Vicodin and Valium

Two painkillers from Eminem's long list of tablet experiences. He said that he started using in small doses, but gradually increased the pace. The result was an overdose in 2007.

“The first time I tried Vicodin I was like, wow.” I not only felt pleasant, I stopped feeling pain. I don't remember when this became a problem. I felt better and better on the pills. People tried to explain to me that I was sick. Fuck them. It’s not heroin or coke,” Eminem said in the film “How To Make Money Selling Drugs.”

- “Eight Mile”

Cult film about battle rap with Eminem in leading role. The action takes place in Detroit. Marshall plays an aspiring rapper named B-Rabbit and his goal is to win a battle tournament reminiscent of the arcade mode of Mortal Kombat, and at the end face the local Shao Kahn. The soundtrack to the film was the track “Lose Yourself” - a song that, perhaps, was not more important in the artist’s career. It also brought Marshall an Academy Award. The rapper missed the award ceremony because he did not believe in his own success.

- Gays

The rapper more than once offended the LGBT community in his lines, and they wrote complaints about discrimination. Marshall's performance on the same stage with Sir Elton John in 2001 did not help relieve the tension. Famous singer, by the way, greatly helped the rapper overcome his addiction, and Eminem even gave him two diamond penis rings for his wedding.

The “reckoning” came in 2009 at the MTV ceremony. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen, in the image of his movie gay alter ego Bruno, descended on a rope in a Cupid costume onto Eminem sitting in the audience. It's better to see once. Later, however, it became known that the trick was rigged. Eminem said that when he returned to the hotel, he laughed at this joke for several hours.

Later, in an interview with the NY Times, the rapper explained that he does not have any hostility towards gays and even supports same-sex marriage. “If two people love each other, then why not? I believe everyone should have an equal chance of being unhappy.” - said the artist.

- The Dirty Dozen

She is also the group D12 (dirty dozen). The group consisted of Eminem and five of his school friends. The team was a trash tent from the world of rap and rapped mainly about drugs, dirty sex and reprisals against haters. Following the death of member Proof in 2006, the group's activity declined.

“Purple Pills” is one of the most famous songs team. It contained so many references to drugs and sex that it was broadcast on radio in a censored version. So she changed the name to “Purple Hills”. A particularly nasty verse from Bizzare even had to be cut completely.

In 2015, D12 (already in the trio format Swift, Bizarre and Kuniwa) came to the Cubana festival. There, Bizarre was shot during a bar fight.

- Detroit

Eminem's hometown. From Marshall's stories, this is such a huge factory for the production of hopelessness. The city, which was the capital of the American auto industry, experienced an economic crisis and population outflow in the 2000s, and went bankrupt in 2013.

Marshall, despite everything, loves this place. “We will never turn our backs on you, because we are you. My home,” he writes in a letter to Detroit.

In 2015, the song “Detroit Vs. Everybody,” the city’s rap anthem. Not only Eminem, but also fellow countrymen Royce Da 5’9”, Danny Brown and Big Sean read on it. Later a remix was released with the rest of the Detroit gang.

- Dr. Dre

Doc and Marshall met by chance: in the garage of the director of Interscope Records, Doc found the “Slim Shady EP” and became interested in the young talent. By that time, Eminem had already released his debut album “Infinite,” which was a sales failure. Marshall is depressed and hasn't been rapping for six months. Dre finds the rapper, and so begins their long-term collaboration.

Thanks to Dre, the “Slim Shady EP” turns into the full-length album “Slim Shady LP”, which made Eminem a star. The success was cemented by the video for the song “My Name Is” - the artist’s first hit.

- “The Eminem Show”

Fourth studio album, 2002. This time is considered peak creative form Marshall, and “Eminem Show” itself is, if not his best album, then very close to it. Eminem talked about serious things: racism, politics and the impact of music on society. At the same time, he remained the same embittered psycho, juggling rhymes and verbal ulcers. You can read about the record in our material.

- Fat Eminem

Now Marshall is in excellent physical shape, but in 2007 the rapper seriously gained weight due to his addiction to Vicodin and Valium. The drugs affected his stomach and he had to eat away the pain. By that time, the rapper weighed 104 kilograms.

Everything changed after the overdose. Marshall came out of rehab and decided to lose weight. He ran 27 kilometers a day and did the “Madness” program. .

- “Infinite”

Debut album 1996. The record was released with Detroit rap radio stations in mind, but no one there needed the release either. The few reviewers who heard the album accused Marshall of copying the style of Nas and AZ.

Thematically, “Infinite” was very different from the rapper’s subsequent albums. Marshall read about the desire to become rich, the difficulties of raising a young daughter, and his love for his girlfriend Kim. On subsequent releases, the rapper will begin to behave shockingly, put down the stars and wish Kim death.

- Kim

They met in Marshall's mother's house - street children were constantly hanging around there. He was 15 at that time, she was 12. A few years later, the couple had a daughter, Hayley. Over the next few years, Marshall and Kim's relationship goes from bad to worse.

Eminem dedicated three songs to Kim: “Searching,” “97 Bonnie & Clyde,” and “Kim.” If the first one is a declaration of love, then the last two are a badiebag in the literal sense of the word. In the lyrics of “97 Bonnie & Clyde,” Marshall and his daughter dump dead body Kim into the lake. To record his daughter’s voice, the rapper had to lie to his wife that he was just going out to eat with her.

Little known fact: Eminem actually has three daughters - Hailie, Alaina and Whitney. Haley is her own child, Alaina is adopted, but Whitney was born from Kim and her boyfriend Eric Khater, but Marshall later adopted her.

- Shady Records

Label founded by Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg in 1999. The first signatories are the group D12 and rapper Obie Trice. In 2002, aspiring rapper 50 Cent joined the label. You know what happened to him next. He left the label in 2014.

A series of cartoons was released to mark the label's 15th anniversary “ShadyXV Quinceañera”- brutal short films in the style of early Disney.

The current lineup of Shady Records besides Eminem: D12, Slaughterhouse, Skylar Gray, Yelawolf, Westside & Conway, Boogie.

- Eminem

A name that everyone knows. But not everyone knows where it came from and what it means. At the beginning of his career, the rapper called himself M&M after the first letters of his first and last name. He later changed his stage name to Eminem. There is also a version that the rapper did this because of possible problems with the M&Ms company. Another fan theory is that Eminem means “Every Mom Is Nice Except Mine.”

- Humor

Eminem is known for his funny videos: he either dresses up as a superhero with a huge fake ass, or sarcastically attacks several celebrities, or parodies Elvis or his own mother. This applies mainly to his character Slim Shady, since today's Eminem prefers to remain more serious in his songs.

To be convinced of Marshall's comedic talent, we recommend watching this selection best moments interviews and evening shows with his participation.

Marshall appeared at school extremely rarely, and when he did come to class, he would perform rap freestyles. At the age of 12, the future musician began to have serious problems. One of the high school students began to pursue him, so Marshall changed several schools. But, despite frequently changing schools, in early 1983 he was beaten and lay in a coma for more than a week. After this, the family moved to Kansas. Here Marshall met his uncle Ronnie, which changed the future forever young man. At the age of 15 he founded his first group. Then the creative pseudonym Eminem appeared. After 2 years, Marshall left school and began performing live on local radio stations. The rapper's first album was released in 1996, but did not bring success. The reason for this was the great competition in hip-hop style in Detroit. On top of that, Eminem was accused of plagiarism. The rapper recorded his second album for himself. The musician had to work in order to take care of his one-year-old daughter, and music did not bring in money. Eminem then decided that if the Slim Shady EP was not successful, he would retire from music forever. Black rapper "Dr. Dre" believed in young performer rap was right: in 1999, Eminem’s music created a real sensation, and the “My Name Is” video never left TV screens. The poignant lyrics of Eminem's compositions have caused a lot of controversy in society. Some people believed that they exposed social problems, others saw them as inciting hatred against same-sex marriage.
The rapper's next serious work was the album "The Marshall Mathers LP", which caused a lot of talk in society in 2000. The most popular songs were “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan”. The second composition was recorded together with singer Dido. The song's video was also received ambiguously by the public. However, the composition “Stan” was included in the list of the 500 best songs according to the authoritative magazine “Rolling Stone”. Eminem constantly came under criticism from the press. So in one of his compositions he insulted his mother, for which she sued her son. Not only the press, but also public organizations took up arms against the rapper. The Association of Gays and Lesbians boycotted the artist at the Grammy, but despite this, the rapper was awarded this prestigious award three times only in 2001. In the same 2001, Eminem began collaborating with the group “D12”. Soon the album “Devil's Night” was released, the singles of which included such tracks as “Purple Pills” and “Fight Music.” A year later, Eminem again caused a scandal: in the “Without Me” video, the musician showed his contempt for the group “Limp Bizkit” and famous musician Moby. Six months later, the rapper’s new album “The Eminem Show” was released, which sold 20 million records worldwide. The apogee of the musician’s work was the released film “Eight Mile,” which is largely autobiographical for Eminem. The film was liked by both critics and the public, and the musician himself received an Oscar for the soundtrack “Lose Yourself.” In the fall of 2004, the musician’s 5th album was released, which was not very popular. At the Grammy Awards, all the laurels went to the young hip-hop artist Kanye West. In 2005 greatest hits The musician was included in the collection “Curtain Call: The Hits”. For the next few years, little was heard about the musician. Only in 2007 the song “OuchDown” was released, but then Eminem again disappeared into the shadows. In 2009, together with the best performers hip-hop Dr. Dre and recorded the song “Crack a bottle,” which stayed at number one on the Billboard Chart for several weeks. The musician's latest album is called "The Marshall Mathers LP 2". It was released in November 2013. In Michigan, Eminem founded the charity The Marshall Mathers Foundation, which helps children from disadvantaged families. This act is probably related to the musician’s difficult childhood.

A year later, the couple divorced. In 2006, the couple got married again, but less than a year later they filed for divorce again. Eminem and Kim have a daughter, Haley Jade Scott.
