In the owner of this inn he recognizes the beautiful Nadezhda, the love of his youth. This meeting becomes a real shock for him.
Once upon a time, when Nadezhda served with the relatives of the hero of this story, there were feelings between them. However, Nikolai parted with his beloved very ugly and knew nothing about her until that day. The hero of “Dark Alleys” was sure that love, like youth, passes, but he was mistaken. Nadezhda never married and continued to love Nikolai. He had a wife and son, but his wife cheated on him and left him with a scandal, and his son grew up to be a scoundrel. The character tries to follow an alternative path, where his fate turns out differently, but he only stumbles upon his own resentment and unforgiveness of Nadezhda, who loves even after many years.
Ivan Bunin's hero wonders what would happen if Nadezhda became not the owner of an inn on the Tula road, but the owner of his own house. What did he lose by breaking up with her many years ago, and what did she lose by giving her youth, beauty and ardor of feelings to a man whom she met only many years later?
