About the Children's Choir of Russia

The Russian Children's Choir was founded in 2014. The initiative to create a song group was made by the participants of the revived All-Russian Choral Society and its chairman, Valery Gergiev. They were looking for gifted children all over the country. The thousand-strong choir united children of sixty nationalities from 84 regions of Russia. Young soloists went through a serious competition - not only their vocal abilities were taken into account, but also their knowledge of music theory, solfeggio, and the ability to master volumetric music in a short time musical material.

The Russian Children's Choir made its debut in January 2014 on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater. Later, the group performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi - the children performed the Russian national anthem and the Olympic Waltz. The choir took part in the first celebration of Russia Day in Sevastopol and in a gala concert in Bolshoi Theater, when the country celebrated the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

On the eighth of January two thousand fourteen new stage The Mariinsky Theater hosted a concert by the Combined Children's Choir of Russia, numbering over a thousand participants. Those who were lucky enough to be in the huge hall that evening witnessed a grand celebration!

The project was initiated by the All-Russian Choral Society. In September two thousand and thirteen, qualifying auditions for children began in eighty-three regions Russian Federation. For an objective and impartial assessment of future project participants, the best choirmasters of Russia were sent to all corners of Russia. To the artistic director The choral studio of boys and young men of St. Petersburg Vadim Pchelkin was asked to audition children in Karelia (Petrozavodsk), Pskov region (Velikie Luki) and the Chechen Republic (Grozny). Based on the results of a competitive selection, the thousand-strong choir included children aged from nine to fourteen years old who have a beautiful voice timbre, are able to quickly learn musical material and are able to work in a large group.

On January 2, two thousand and fourteen, young singers from all over Russia arrived in St. Petersburg and settled in hotels in our city. Rehearsals began on January 3rd. They took place in the new building of the Mariinsky Theater and in the hall of the Academic Chapel.

The thousand-strong choir was divided into nine districts. In each district, from six to sixteen regions of our country were represented. Nine choirmasters began working with the districts.

Today's concert began with a performance by the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra led by people's artist Russia Valery Gergiev. After Georgiy Sviridov’s brilliantly performed overture “Time, Forward,” the curtain began to slowly rise and auditorium was filled with unbridled delight. A thousand children's faces, glowing with happiness, smiled from the stage. Everyone who witnessed this moment experienced a special feeling.

Accompanied by an orchestra, the choir performed such works as Isaac Dunaevsky’s song “Fly, Doves”, Alexandra Pakhmutova’s works “Good Choir” and “Heroes of Sports”, Arkady Ostrovsky’s anthem “Let there always be sunshine”. A polyphony filled the hall, consisting of thousands of children's souls and merging into a single voice - the voice of Russia.

In addition to the combined works, the children of each district independently performed one piece, previously selected and taught by the choirmaster working with them.

The North-Western Federal District, under the direction of Vadim Pchelkin, performed Georgy Sviridov’s composition to the poems of S. Yesenin “The Rus' that set sail”.

Vadim Pchelkin says: “It was interesting for me to participate in such a grandiose project at all its stages: from concept to implementation. During this period of time, a lot of unusual things happened, but I will mention only two of the most striking moments: a trip to Grozny and a rehearsal with the children's choir of the Northwestern Federal District.

The trip to Grozny changed my worldview and idea of the North Caucasus, and rehearsals with the Children's Choir gave me the best winter holidays of my life! The warmth and love that I received over these few January days from children whom I had never met before became the best Christmas gift for me. I have never had to sign so many autographs and wishes! I sincerely hope that these amazing girls and boys will remember our rehearsals and successful performance on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater!”

In just a month, the Russian Children's Choir will be entrusted with a special mission - to perform at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and this unique group will be seen by the whole world.
